Who’s the champion??!!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have come to end of May Challenge…… whooop whoooop!!!

Oh and this is getting boring but as expected, I totally finished first. Again!! *flexes biceps* 😀

You really think i’m going to end it at that? You clearly don’t know me well; make way for Braggy Bose… she approaches. Sometime last week, in the heat of the #Petrocalypse that besieged our dear nation, Corporations such as MTN, GTB, Airtel, several media houses etc put out statements apologising for the skeletal services they would be putting out in the wake; it was scary. So while we are worrying about that, my dear friend Humzz decided to take advantage of the perfect window and make like GEJ. She tweets me this hilarity……

My response? I had receipts!


You’d agree that i’m very gracious. Aren’t I? Lmao. I just had to! See this girl Humzz had tormented me the entire duration of this challenge; she made sure this win [if I did win] wouldn’t be an easy one for me and I hated her for it. Like i’d be sleeping and dreading what will show on my challenge board by the time I wake up because i’m sure she has gone out to do a half marathon. Come on!!! There were days her Nike app won’t update for like 3 days and i’ll be sleeping easy thinking I got this, then one day i’ll just wake up and see “you’re currently 18kms behind 1st”; Vex!!!! Confession: One day, she sprained her ankle and skipped 2 days, I was secretly hoping the leg doesn’t get better for like a week so I can give her major gap. ha ha Sorry Humzz.

So imagine my happiness, joy, contentment and relief the day she now sent this tweet out…..

Awwwwwww!!! Such a gracious loser! hhhahahahahahahahhahahahaaahaha. I replied thus:  

All jokes aside, I meant that tweet. See, this whole fitfam thing started because of Humzz and she made it her business to hold me accountable everyday, relentless. I started with walks, walks turned into jogs and soon enough, I was running and I still am; I have no one to thank but her. Even with this challenge,although over 20 people signed up to participate, only 3 of those 20 ever logged in, Humzz being the biggest contender. You gave me a tough run and I appreciate you signing up and keeping me on my toes but as life usually plays out, most times, the student becomes better than the master so…. here’s to many more challenges. Come visit soon, I owe you drinks 😛

During this challenge, I noticed that I was very anxious about finishing [and finishing well] because I was so tired towards the last week of the month. Tired and bored. I didn’t realise how much work 350kms would require and even though I usually take Sundays off, during this challenge, I was working out Sundays too because I didn’t want to lag behind too far. Stress!!! And I got bored of doing the same thing, so I added T25 on some days and changed my scenery/route; Doosh and I even went to the stadium…. Love working out there.


My fear with having running as my main workout is having a runner’s body – lean and athletic – During this challenge, I noticed my “yams” got stronger and my thighs more defined and I SAY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! No Bueno. I love having curves and a soft cuddly body and I totally enjoy my midnight chats with the twins, so I’m worried about losing them and having my legs/thighs bulk up a’la Marion Jones. Nah. So i’m probably going to have to redesign my workouts, maybe reduce running to only 3 times a week and include other types of workouts. I’ll keep y’all posted.

I must say, I found it quite odd that even though about 20 people signed up for the challenge, only 4 logged in and participated; the rest have zero kms/miles and I’m very confused, what happened? Maybe they got bored with it like I did but they didn’t even log in half a kilometer EVER, so I don’t even know. Lol. Please let me know what the problem was and maybe I can fix it in our next challenge. I’m already thinking of what we can collectively do for the month of June, but seriously, I need a challenge break right now plus, next time, I need to better think a challenge through proper before rushing to share the deets with you guys. So when I do figure that out, i’ll be sure to share either here or on my twitter @GBTheBlog.

So glad its over.

During this challenge, I tried to have as many healthy smoothies as I possibly could. Having Charlotte in my life makes the smoothie experience such a breeze and fun/enjoyable moment that I think my old juicer is jealous. I’ve kuku packed in back into the box like….

The thing with smoothies is that you have to be creative and experiment with many different mixes, worst case – you’d figure out what you DON’T LIKE while at it. Below are some of the smoothies/mixes I’ve experimented with and I hope they inspire you to go to town with yours. Don’t forget to share with me what you’re loving/hating  😀

Alot of people get completely turned off by Green juices/smoothies because of that colour but I’m telling you, don’t knock it until you try it…. Green juices are the best pick me up juices. Infact, when I drink a green smoothie, I literally feel like my insides got a spring clean wash and my skin has been in the best state its ever been in; I know its the internal cleansing coming through. Green juices/smoothies taste of the predominant component of the mix, the colour is most likely so because green usually overpowers other colours [simple primary school colour class]…. One time I shared a green juice on twitter and one guy replied me saying “why the fuck will I ever want to drink spinach?” Walahi, I felt his anger come through in his 140s. LMAO. Just try it guys 😀

And the birthday goodies just keep rolling in! But who’s complaining? Not me though!

A few weeks before my birthday, I shared a birthday wishlist and in there, I mentioned that I really wanted a Nutribullet. Yesterday, I get a call from a konga dispatch guy and this baby got delivered.


She’s so pretty, I could cry!!!!!!

You guys! In the smoothie/juicing world, the Nutribullet is the real deal! This is premium stuff! This is the Kim in the Kardashian household, this is the Enyeama of the Nigerian football team, this is that bra you’ve had for 10 years that’s barely threads by now but still packs your twins like they’re prepubescent. You get my point! LOL. I am so excited about this and I just couldn’t sit still until I had given her a test run [but not after I’ve read the manual cover to back].  I’ve named her Charlotte [not to steal the royal baby’s thunder] but this is my princess. I shall treat her so well, she’ll love me forever. No type of epileptic power situation, NEPA and power surges shall come between us; I shall never be too tired to clean you up after use, I promise you this. Welcome to my life Charlotte, we gon be besties!!!! Just be good to me.

Like I mentioned, I’m that person who will sit down and read the fine print of a product before I use it. Yup! I’m not going to ruin something I love and is probably expensive just because I was too impatient to hold off for a few hours and check all the checkables. So as excited as I was yesterday, I still took all of my evening to read the attached User Guide, Recipe Book and Pocket nutritionist; and i’m glad I did because I noticed that it says you shouldn’t run the motor for more than 1 minute per cycle and that it has an in-built heating detector that forces the thing to stop working if it overheats – meaning, you’d have to wait till it cools down before you can use it again. Important tip because that’s the complaint many nutribullet users have – that it stops working – meaning they probably overworked the poor thing. I ain’t playing with Charlotte like that! LOL

I also saw the it has tons of recipe inspirations in it and a 6 week program that can be helpful for anyone who wants to take up this lifestyle. Awesome.

To make a wholesome smoothie, it needs to have a combo of different stuff that generally falls in 4 broad food categories:

  • Leafy Greens – Kale, Spinach, Spring Greens, Lettuce, Collard Greens etc
  • Fruits – Mango, watermelon, Apples, Banana, Blueberry, Avocado, grapes, pear, peach, oranges, plum, raspberries, strawberries, kiwi, pawpaw,pineapple etc
  • Boosts – Nuts [almonds, cashew, walnuts], Seeds[Chia, flax,Sesame],Super chargers [goji berries, acai berries] , oats, granola etc
  • Lastly, a base – water, milk [almond, soy,lowfat], juice , unsweetended/greek yoghurt, green tea etc.

Now we know all about the shenanigans of NEPA in our dear country Nigeria so it really isn’t realistic and pocket friendly to stock up on quick perishables if they’re going to be thrown out in 3 days; so my tip is to stock on up the stuff that keeps well but only buy fruits & veggies to last a week tops. Like the stash I got on Wednesday should last me a week at least.

I always have mangoes & oranges in surplus because they’re in season and Benue is just 3 hours away. Someone is always coming or going. Win!

The Boost family keeps well so I stock up and some of these have been in my kitchen for more than 6 months.


Although my preferred smoothie base is water, I haven’t sworn off others. I also add protein powder sometimes in juices for some thickness and filling.

Soooooooooooooooooo….. I took Charlotte for a spin this morning and made a simple Mango/Spinach/Goji Berries and Oats smoothie. I crushed some ice into it before pureeing; if you must add ice before, its better crushed because it’s easier on the blades. Full ice cubes will spoil the blades in no time.



Once my smoothie was ready [in less than a minute], I simply added ice cubes into the cup, tossed in a straw and sipped away while imagining that I was on some resort in Bali. Yea, Imagination is everything. Don’t be put off by the colour, it was proper yum. If you aren’t convinced and you know my house, come and i’ll make you some 😀 YUUUUUUMMM!!!!

This is without a doubt, the best smoothie I’ve ever made. Smooth, tasty and super easy to drink – hence the straw. Seamless passage.  There’s a reason the nutribullet is hailed as the DON DADA of smoothie makers. For you busy people, this is what you need. Load the cup before bedtime & leave in the fridge; then whiz for a minute by morning and head out the door while sipping as you go. Invest in one, you’d be glad you did.

Funny Story: I saw a tweet once that said if you’re complaining about the cost of buying healthy food/stuff and refusing to pay then you must be saving the money to pay for your medical bills. LMAO. This fitfam life is not easy/cheap but it’s totally worth it. Truly. Thankfully, I didn’t have to pay for Charlotte. God bless the person who sent me Charlotte.
